Discover the Key to Recognizing Your Military Spouse on Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Updated: Apr 29

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day and it’s a great opportunity to show gratitude for the sacrifices they make. However, recognizing your spouse’s efforts in a way that resonates with them is the key.

This is where the Five Love Languages come in, the concept is from a book by Gary Chapman that identifies five ways people express and experience love. There is a free quiz online. The five love languages are:

  1. Words of Affirmation: This love language involves expressing love through verbal compliments, praise, and kind words.

  2. Acts of Service: This love language involves showing love by performing helpful actions or tasks for your partner, such as doing the dishes, cooking dinner, or running errands.

  3. Receiving Gifts: This love language involves showing love through the giving and receiving of gifts, whether they are small or large. The key aspect is that the gift represents thoughtfulness and effort.

  4. Quality Time: This love language involves showing love by spending time together, giving each other undivided attention, and engaging in meaningful activities together.

  5. Physical Touch: This love language involves showing love through physical affection, such as holding hands, hugging, kissing, or other forms of touch.

According to Chapman, people often have a primary love language that they prefer, but may also appreciate other love languages as well. Understanding your partner’s love language can help you communicate love more effectively, deepen your connection, and build a stronger relationship.

My love language is quality time, my spouse is acts of service. I used to get annoyed when he would spend hours in the kitchen cooking (this was pre-kids) instead of interacting with me, but over time I realized cooking was his love language and I learned to appreciate that – my spouse learned that sometimes I just want us to hang out with each other.

Understanding your partner’s love language can help you appreciate their gestures of love even more. Consider taking the quiz today, and maybe your spouse too, so that you can better recognize each others’ gestures of love throughout the year.
